Rev. James (Jay) R. Caves, Sr. went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 26, 2018 at his residence in Okeechobee, FL. He was a former resident of Jackson county for many years, and a Southern Baptist minister for over 60 years. He retired from pastoring at the age of 80, however he never stopped preaching and “planting seeds” of faith wherever he went. James was a devoted husband to his wife Bobbie, who was forever by his side, for 66 years. He was a loving “Daddy” and an adoring “Papa”. During his life, he was a skilled brick mason, a talented farmer and gardener, and an expert fisherman. He is survived by four children, Linda Caves-Reaves of Scottsboro, AL, James Robert Caves, Jr. and wife Joan of Okeechobee, FL, Donnie Ray Caves and wife Ann of Huntsville, AL, and Rebecca Jeanette Caves-Hiott of Okeechobee, FL; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Dillard and Louella Caves, brothers John Wesley and Billy Caves, sisters Bonnie Shoemake and Colleen Raulston and an infant brother, sons-in-law John E. Reaves, Sr., and Maj. Erskine DuVal Hiott, Jr. Visitation will be held Friday, February 2nd at Valley Funeral Home in Scottsboro from 5-8pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 3rd at 11:00 am at Valley Funeral Home chapel with Robert Caves officiating. Pall bearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Eddie Reaves of Scottsboro, AL, Rob Caves of Ft. Myers, FL, Andy Caves of Scottsboro, AL, Walt Caves of Okeechobee, FL, Hunter Reaves of Dothan, AL, Eric Emperio of Okeechobee, FL, Lizzie Hiott of San Antonio, TX, and Kayla Caves of Okeechobee, FL.
